La Carnia

La Carnia is located in the far northeastern section of Italy, forming the southern border of Austria.The region which is called La Carnia is situated in the north of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. Cadore lies on the western border of La Carnia. The Tagliamente River runs from Ampezzo to Tolmezzo, forming the southwestern boundary of La Carnia. The shores of the Chiarṣ River lie in the east of La Carnia. The Carnic Alps form a natural border on the north of La Carnia. Three main valleys--called canali--drain the Alpine mountains of La Carnia. The special geographical conditions led to flood disasters which have been documented in nearly every century. For centuries also, La Carnia has also been known as an infamous region of seismic activity and destructive earthquakes. As recently as 1976, a large 6.6 earthquake destroyed buildings and killed more than 1,000 people in La Carnia.
