English translation of the letter of safe-conduct

IN CHRIST`S NAME AMEN

To each and all who shall see, read and hear this our writing, to the illustrious and right reverend Archbishops, Bishops, Abbots and other honorable dignitaries of the church, as well as to the most illustrious Dukes and Princes, the illustrious Margraves, Counts, Rulers and Judges of the cities, to the Protectors of every village and colony, to all who stand above us we proclaim honour and respect, but to those of our rank and others greetings and love. We, Nicolaus Janisi, governour of Venice, as representative of the most august government, governours, tressurers, counselours, judges and rulers of the community of Tolmezzo and of the president of the entire province of Carnia make known by virtue of this letter and testify publicly that the respectable, wise and worthy man, Mr. Leonard, son of Sebastian Cimiotti of Plan, in the quarter of St. Peter, is proved to have been born in lawful and honorable and commendable marriage which was concluded between the above named respectable Mr. Sebastian and Angela a`Rubeo, of the same place, born of an honorable family, mother of the same Leonard, who has become known to us both from the common report of those who know him and particularly from the testimony of the wise and honorable men, Messrs. Osuald Cozzi and J. Cozzi, son of the above named Osuald, of the above named place Plan, our district, who after being placed by us under legal and solemn oath have corroborated and sworn to all the above information. Therefore, we the above named, Governour, treasurers, professors, judges and counselours of our dear above-named Leonard Cimiotti, of Plan, who is dear and worthy to us because of his character and virtues, recommend most urgently to each and all to whom he may apply or wherever he may stay at times and we appeal to the favour and justice of every most illustrious prince and judge that they permit no injustice to be done him whenever he travels through their region or stays within their borders, and that they show themselves favourable to him in everything just and right that he may ask, and treat him with especial kindness and wherever he may stay on his trip. This we desire so much, that so far as the dear people there are concerned, in case they ever come to us we shall repay in like manner in treatment and help with all power, favour and respect those who do a favour to our dear and worthy citizen. In testimony and attestation of all this we cause this our license to be written and confirmed with our double mutual larger seal.

GIVEN IN OUR LAND TOLMEZZO IN THE YEAR OF THE LORD 1735, AUGUST 30
